Hi, I’m David. 👋
I am a Materials Scientist with over 15 years of research experience specializing in semiconductor thin films, advanced electron microscopy, and microstructural analysis. Over the years, I’ve focused heavily on understanding how crystalline materials and device structures behave at the microscopic level—and sharing those insights through academic collaborations, mentoring, and writing.
Beyond the lab, I also love organizing large-scale events, managing data logistics, and building community projects.
What I Do Best
- Microscopy & Characterisation: I dive deep into materials using techniques like TEM, STEM, EELS, and EDX to analyze thin films and catch defects.
- Technical Communication: Whether it’s writing peer-reviewed papers, drafting grants, or creating content as a freelance writer, I aim to try to translate complex physics and materials science into clear, readable stories for any audience.
My Journey So Far
- Welsh Chess Union & Newport Chess Congress | Tournament Director & Rating Officer (2023–Present)
I organize and run Wales’ largest-attended chess congress, manage complex national and international rating data, build our WordPress websites, and lead fantastic teams of volunteers. - Freelance Technical Writer (2014–2019)
Spent a few years focusing on communication, writing about physics and materials science for both specialist and mainstream readers. (Followed by a brief family career break from 2020–2022). - Postdoctoral Research Associate | University of Sheffield (1998–2014)
Spent over a decade researching superconducting and semiconducting thin-film structures, collaborating with industry partners, maintaining lab gear, and mentoring brilliant PhD and MSc students.
